The hieroglyphic alphabet symbols were used by the ancient Egyptians as a method of communication.
Every Egyptian Pharaoh and Queen had a Cartouche which spelt out their name in hieroglyphics. This Cartouche was designed as an oval shaped loop of rope with a knot. It symbolized everything that the sun encircled and was an indication of the Pharaoh's rule of the universe.
It was believed by placing a name inside the oval rope the Cartouche empowered and protected the Pharaoh. Cartouches come in many different shapes and designs: solid, filigree, circular, inlaid with gemstones, as pendants, also in cufflinks, bracelets, rings and key rings.
